Did you know the local woods are remnants of Nottingham's famous Sherwood Forest? It is perfect for walking, bike riding, foraging and exploring. This quiet stretch of forest covers the width of Annesley and Newstead Village and is home to a variety of species of woodland creatures. These range from common sightings of squirrels and foxes to rare encounters with members of the local deer population.
The Newstead and Annesley Country Park is only a stones throw from our front door. Here you will find beautiful natural scenery which was once the site for the Annesley Pit. This spot is teeming with bio-diversity, being favoured by birdwatchers for its notable variety of species of birds. During your walk you may find ponds, woodlands, the inhabiting local wildlife and beautiful views of the surrounding Nottinghamshire countryside.
After Annesley Pit closed in January 2000 the lagoon complex was left unmanaged for several years which facilitated the flourishing of the natural habitat. In 2009 the land was taken over by a charity called RCAN (Rural Community Action for Nottinghamshire) who, through their developments, have achieved such a wonderful spot.
Is history your thing? Or, maybe feel like checking out some local attractions during your stay?
Newstead Abbey, once an Augustinian priory, is now a beautiful historic house that stands in the picturesque grounds made up of gardens and parkland. This covers over 300 acres of land that is connected by paths which will take you past ponds, lakes and waterfalls.
The formal gardens are an ideal setting to relax. Each garden has alternating colour spectrums that are changing all year round, from the rhododendrons in spring to the Japanese maples in autumn.
The house itself was most famously the home of the poet Lord Byron in the early 1800s. Inside there is much to explore, including Victorian rooms, and even the poets private apartments. The grounds are also host to many fun events, including outdoor theatre productions, house tours, exhibitions and more!
It is a 30 minute walk from the neighbouring village of Newstead or only a 5 minute drive by car.
